As New York State’s Human Rights Commissioner, she’s holding the line against one of her city’s own native sons. In our conversation, Denise makes the case that civil rights aren’t just for “other people”—they protect everyone. She talks about what it means to be rooted in a community, how New York is serving as a guardrail against federal erosion of hard-won protections, and why engaging young people is our best hope for the future.
